Methamphetamine has become one of the most widespread, powerfully addictive drugs, in the nation. Narconon Vista Bay knows this all too well. With multiple clients entering the Narconon Drug Treatment Program weekly who are addicted to Methamphetamine’s, we are seeing the expansive grip that this drug has on our community at large.
Word on the Street
Chalk, Crank, Crystal, Glass, Go-Fast, Ice, Meth, Poor Man’s Cocaine, Shards, Speed, Tweak, Uppers… call it what you will, it’s out there, and many are after it. Meth does not discriminate. Meth will become anyone’s friend and worst enemy. Enticing people with its ability to improve concentration, energy, and alertness while decreasing the need for food and sleep; this drug grabs ahold. Killing people with its tendency to constrict the walls of the arteries, increase blood pressure, body temperature and heart rate, cause brain damage, kidney failure, and stroke; this drug takes its users down.
Nutritional Facts
Meth is considered to be one of the dirtiest, most poisonous drugs around. Often made in bath tubs, or “labs”, it is created by the breaking down and then combining of various household substances. In an average batch of methamphetamine one can find flammable and volatile solvents such as methanol, ether, benzene, methylene chloride, trichloroethane, and toluene. Other common household chemicals include muriatic acid, sodium hydroxide, table salt, and ammonia.
Choose Your Method
Methamphetamine can be ingested many different ways. It can be swallowed by putting it in empty capsules, mixing it with water, or adding it to coffee. Meth can be cut into a fine powder and snorted into the nose through a straw. It can be smoked in a glass pipe, light bulb, or on foil. Meth can also be injected into a vein with a needle, either dry or dissolved in liquid. No matter which way a user chooses to get high on methamphetamine, it’s extremely addicting and terribly dangerous.
Who’s Using It?
As you now know, this drug that was at one time considered to be the poor man’s cocaine, can be anyone’s vice. Teens of all kinds, teachers, business men, college students, truck drivers, the stay at home mom next door, truly anyone. In 2009, 1.2 million Americans ages 12 and up had abused methamphetamine at least once. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) published a study showing that 1.2% of 8th graders, 1.6% of 10th graders, and 1.0% of 12th graders had abused methamphetamine at least once. The thing with Meth is that it can draw so many people, with the immediate effects that it produces. The other thing with Meth is that it literally takes using it just once, and you can be hooked. The power of this drug is immeasurable.
The Other Side of the Tracks
Meth can be found everywhere across the country. 47% of County Sheriff’s report that Meth is undoubtedly there biggest drug problem, stating that it is more widespread than both cocaine and marijuana use combined. A shocking 68% of state and local agencies in the 20 Western states find Meth to be their biggest problem. Hospitals nationwide have also reported that 47% of emergency room visits that are drug related involve methamphetamines. As a country, we can no longer see Meth as a problem on the other side of the tracks.
